Garden Club of Minneapolis
The Garden Club of Minneapolis, formerly the Men’s and Women’s Garden Club of Minneapolis, celebrates its 82nd year in 2024. The club was initially chartered in 1942 as the Men’s Garden Club of Minneapolis. The club was a refuge for some of Minneapolis’ most elite businessmen and physicians who enjoyed gardening. Over the years, women began to attend meetings and in 2012, “and Women” was added to the name to reflect the change in membership. Our mission statement declares the club is “an organization for all people interested in gardening.” In 2023, the membership voted to change the name to the Garden Club of Minneapolis (GCM) to reflect our mission and be welcoming to all Twin Cities area residents.
The GCM is for everyone who loves to garden— whatever their experience level. Our members hail from the Twin Cities metro area and beyond to share gardening knowledge with each other and the community. From the club’s beginning, the GCM has dedicated itself to contributing to the betterment of the community and its individual members through gardening and horticultural activities. The club has a long history of community service, including being instrumental to the inception of the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Additionally, a large area, consisting of three separate gardens at Lyndale Park in Minneapolis, has been planted and maintained by GCM members as a gift to the community. Multiple scholarships are awarded annually to horticultural students at Minnesota colleges and universities.
Benefits of Membership include:
· Monthly social hour and meeting with educational programs by local gardening experts on the latest horticultural topics
· Award winning monthly newsletter— The Garden Spray
· Interact with friendly gardeners whose skill sets range from beginner to expert
· Expansive annual plant sale every May
· Volunteer at Lyndale Park Gardens and learn about garden design and how to grow and enjoy the benefits of native plantings
· Summer tours of exceptional private gardens in the Twin Cities area
· The Flower, Food and Foto Show each August at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum offers competitive categories for flowers, vegetables, potted plants and photography. The competition and show are open to the public
· 2 day presence at the Minnesota State Fair in the Horticultural Building
· An annual awards banquet
